Message Transfer

Export and import your encrypted message backups, or move them peer-to-peer between devices.

Message Transfer lets you move your encrypted message history between devices — either via a passphrase-protected file backup or peer-to-peer over a temporary WebRTC link.

  1. 1
    Export passphrase

Sets the passphrase that protects the backup file. Minimum 8 characters.

  2. 2
    Confirm passphrase

    Re-type to confirm. Must match.

  3. 3
    Export backup

Encrypts your messages with the passphrase and downloads the backup file.

  4. 4
    Backup file

Pick the .json file you previously exported.

  5. 5
    Import passphrase

The passphrase you set when exporting.

  6. 6
    Import backup

Decrypts the file and merges its messages into this device.

  7. 7
    This device is the source

Peer-to-peer mode — this device sends its messages to the other.

  8. 8
    This device is the target

Peer-to-peer mode — this device receives messages from the other.

  9. 9
    Start (source)

Creates an offer code that you give to the target device.

  10. 10
    Copy offer / answer code

Copies the WebRTC handshake code to the clipboard so you can paste it on the other device.

  11. 11
    Apply answer (source)

Pastes the answer code from the target device to complete the handshake.

  12. 12
    Create answer (target)

Generates an answer code in response to the source's offer.
