Settings
All the knobs — dictation tier, translation engine, keyboard theme and accent color, clipboard auto-detect, history mode, offline models, accessibility, account, privacy and data, support.
The settings screen is long because there are a lot of choices to make. It's organised top-to-bottom in sections; each section is described below.
Your handle
A public username — letters, numbers, and underscores, 3–30 characters. Once set, it's permanent (with a one-time change available).
- 1Change handle (one-time only)
Reveals the input field below so you can pick your handle.
- 2Handle input (choose_a_handle)
Type your desired handle. As you type, a small label tells you whether it's available, taken, or invalid.
- 3Save
Saves the handle. Remember — this is a one-time-only change.
- 4Cancel
Closes the input without saving.
Dictation
Picks the speech-recognition tier the keyboard uses when you hold the mic.
- 5Offline
On-device dictation — no network needed. Premium only. Set up the model under Offline Mode below.
- 6Standard
Cloud dictation tuned for everyday speech. Good default for most users.
- 7Pro
Cloud dictation tuned for higher accuracy and trickier audio. Slower but more accurate.
- 8Medical
Cloud dictation tuned for medical vocabulary (English, Spanish, German, French only). Picking Medical resets your source language to one of those four if needed.
Speech Recording
How the audio is uploaded to the dictation service.
- 9Fast
Compressed Opus audio. Smaller upload, faster round-trip. Recommended for most users.
- 10Accurate
Uncompressed WAV. Slower but highest fidelity for edge cases — noisy environments, soft speakers, unusual accents.
Translation Engine
Which engine does the actual translation.
- 11V-Translate
Vavus's standard translation service — fast and reliable for everyday phrases.
- 12Vavus AI
Large-language-model translation — slower but more context-aware. Good for sentences that need tone or nuance preserved. Reveals two extra sections below for fine-tuning.
- 13Offline
On-device translation, no network needed. Premium only. Set up the language packs under Offline Mode below.
Vavus AI Mode (only visible when engine = Vavus AI)
- 14Fast
Smaller, faster AI model. Great for short messages.
- 15Accurate
Larger, more capable AI model. Slower but produces more polished translations.
Vavus AI Provider (only visible when engine = Vavus AI)
- 16Gemini
Routes Vavus AI translation through Google's Gemini.
- 17GPT
Routes Vavus AI translation through OpenAI's GPT.
Keyboard Theme
- 18Current (theme preview row)
Tap the row to open the theme picker — ten presets (Light, Dark, Ocean, Rose, Mint, Sunset, Lavender, Stealth, Win 98, High Contrast) shown as little keyboard-shaped tiles.
Accessibility
- 19High contrast keyboard theme
Switches the keyboard to a high-contrast palette designed for low-vision users. Toggling off restores the theme you had before.
- 20Reduce motion — Follow system
Default. Animations follow iOS / Android's system Reduce Motion setting.
- 21Reduce motion — Always reduce
Forces minimal animation regardless of your system setting.
- 22Reduce motion — Always animate
Forces full animation regardless of your system setting.
Accent Color
- 23Current (accent swatch row)
Tap to open the accent-color picker — six swatches (Blue, Green, Pink, Amber, Purple, Orange). The theme's own accent color shows as "Theme default" when none of the swatches match.
Behavior
- 24Auto-detect Clipboard
When ON, the keyboard shows a translation banner whenever you copy foreign-language text from any app. When OFF, you have to tap the clipboard button on the toolbar yourself.
- 25Keyboard History — Off
Don't save keyboard history at all.
- 26Keyboard History — On Device
Save history encrypted on this device only. Doesn't sync to other devices.
- 27Keyboard History — Cloud Sync
Save history encrypted to your Vavus account so it syncs across your devices. The encryption key is yours — we store ciphertext only.
Offline Mode (only shown when offline is supported on your device)
- 28Status row (Offline Ready / STT Ready / etc.)
Tells you whether on-device dictation and translation are ready to use, or what still needs to happen (download a model, update iOS, etc.).
- 29Dictation Model — Download
Downloads an on-device speech-recognition model. ~30 MB per language pair.
- 30Dictation Model — Active
Indicates the model the keyboard will use for offline dictation.
- 31Dictation Model — Delete
Removes a downloaded model from your device to free space.
- 32Offline Translation Provider
iPhone only. Switches between Apple's on-device Translation (faster, system-managed) and Google's ML Kit (more language coverage, manually downloaded).
- 33Offline Languages
Opens a list of language packs you can download and delete for offline translation.
Chat translation in other apps (Android only)
- 34Translate incoming messages
OFF by default. When you flip it ON, Vavus walks you through enabling its Accessibility Service so it can show a one-tap "Translate" bar inside 12 chat apps (WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram, Signal, Discord, Slack, Teams, Google Messages, Instagram, LINE, Viber, Snapchat).
